  • How often to take a break from AI

It’s commonly accepted that to maintain optimal health and productivity during the work day you should take a 5-10 minute break from the computer every hour.

    That’s at a minimum.

If you’re an office worker or a wfh worker, you should get plenty of opportunities to get up from your desk and get away from the computer screen each hour. A face to face meeting, a short walk to the kitchen to get a drink, go to the toilet, have a hallway conversation.

That’s an easy 5-10 minutes away from the screen. And no, don’t spend this time on your phone.

So how often and for how long should you take a break from AI?

For now, let’s start with this:

Don’t spend more than half of any hour using AI.

So use AI tools and platforms for a maximum of 30 minutes each hour. That means take a break from AI every hour and spend no more than half of your work day using it.

  • What this isn’t

Human grounding, as the term initialised here, is not “earthing”.

Grounding, also known as earthing, is when you stand on the earth or have contact with a product that’s grounded into the earth. This is thought to connect your body to the natural electric charge of the earth and transfer electrons into your body.

So for the sake of clarity, “grounding” as a word by itself and “human earthing” as a phrase both refer to the practice of making direct skin contact with the Earth.

  • Human Grounding?

    Yeah, human grounding.

It’s a deliberate break from AI, to make a human connection.

We instinctively know we need it.

We just aren’t sure what to call it.

That act needs a name, so here it is.

“Human grounding” is the phrase to describe the intentional act of stepping away from AI to prioritise human interaction.

That’s what we’ll call it, it starts here.
